Red Cat .........
My first Caterham Seven!
Supplied as a kit in 1995 and originally built as a Rover powered
1400cc Supersport "C-class" race car - a Caterham organised race series of
cars with identical RAC MSA sealed engines enabling competitive racing on a
sensible budget.
In 1400cc form the car was used
for a combination of touring, track time, and many miles of relaxed Sevening!
With both trips to Le Mans and the Highlands of Scotland, even
with the reputably long-legged 5 speed box it was a very capable performer. But
then upgradeitis hit .....
Following a quick discussion with
Dave Andrews of DVA
Power in late 2002, a date was arranged to rebuild an
1800cc K-Series unit to commence
a conversion project. The rebuild and conversion was completed in
early 2003 and was a straight "A"s success! Upgradeitis had bitten hard, and
with less than 1000 miles on the now 1800cc Supersport engine it was back into
the workshop, this time for a throttle body and Emerald engine management setup.
Although much has been
substantially
modified since 1995, the character
and simplicity of the car still remains.
One important
modification made during 2006 was the fitment of a dry-sump system
enabling hard track driving with a much reduced fear of oil starvation and the
resulting bearing damage. All in all, an excellent Seven and a joy to have
owned!
